**We interrupt my rambling diatribe for this urgent post**
Aaahh Freak out!
Le Freak, C'est Chic
Freak out!
Aaahh Freak out!
Le Freak, C'est Chic
Freak out!
Aaahh Freak out!
Le Freak, C'est Chic
Freak out!
Aaahh Freak out!
Le Freak, C'est Chic
Freak out!
Hopefully, that song will be ingrained in your head for the rest of the day. God knows it's been in mine since October. My thoughts have been running rampant while I've been "resting my IT band"*. This could very well be another series of posts. Nevertheless...:
It hasn't.
Breathe, Raz. Breathe.
*Not a euphemism.
- What if my IT band acts up like it did on my 20 miler?
- I haven't trained well for this. How many weeks did I only get 3 runs in?
- My diet sucks. I need to detox. I've been living off of sugar cookies, almonds and more sugar cookies for the past 2 weeks.
- How big of a difference is there really between Cytomax and Gatorade? Do I really need a fuel belt of my own stuff?
- If there's a band every mile on the course, do I need the iPod?
- What if the bands suck?
- How much is my pre-race routine going to be altered because of the impending traffic issues?
- Does my friend/driver know where to go?
- Will I be getting any sleep the night before?
- 45 degrees at the start of the race and 60 when I finish? That's quite a temperature swing.
- Which shoes do I go with? Both have about the same amount of miles.
- Don't forget the Body Glide.
- 26.2 miles? That the f*** was I thinking???? I barely managed 20 and now I'm going to spend another hour (if I'm lucky) on the road?
It hasn't.

It's all good. Sorry... umm ... what did you say? I was dancing to Chic's Le Freak and not paying any attention.
Taper well. Good luck homie. :)
Friggen queen is all I'm saying :P LOL JK!
Breathe! You will be fine! I recommend taking the iPod. In my previous experience with Rock N Roll races, you can pull out your headphones to hear the band, but it's kind of quiet on the parts of the courses where you can't hear them.
Look around. Yep, that's a well traveled road your thoughts are traveling down.
Whenever I hear Le Freak, I want to wear roller skates for some reason.
If there's a band every mile on the course, do I need the iPod?
In my experience, the length of time one can hear a route-side band is in reality very brief. It's there and gone.
What if the bands suck?
This has also been my experience...
45 degrees at the start of the race and 60 when I finish?
Dress for the warmer temperature. The last thing you want is to feel uncomfortably warm and have clothing you either can't or don't want to dispose of. And we all know just how warm we can get after a couple miles of running. When my marathon started it was less than 40 degrees and I was in shorts and a short-sleeved tech shirt. I also had on a throwaway ratty old cotton sweatshirt. I ditched it at mile 1 and was totally fine.
You'll be fine! Good luck!
Almonds are healthy. Sugar cookies carb loading. Le freak ce n'est PAS chic. No need to freak out. Maybe bad bands would help you keep moving to get out of earshot...power of positive thinking, etc, etc!
Good luck, I'm sure it will be great :).
I have some IT Band issues myself, and my experience has been that it's better to rest while you can, but if it bothers you during a race, it's something you can push through. If it starts to hurt, I also recommend not completely stopping at a water station if you can help it...my legs never want to start again if they come to a complete stop.
-You don't need a fuel belt
-You do need an iPod
-Wear whatever shoes you wore during your best run
-Get some bananas in your life
-You won't get any sleep the night before (but you'll be totally fine)
-Put Ibuprofen in your pocket and don't be afraid to use it
As for the rest, yeah, you're being over-dramatic. :o)
I was doing OK until I came here today. Maybe I'll just stop coming here until after the marathon.
Haven't I read those questions somewhere before? Oh, right, they were all in my head a few months ago. 45 to 60 isn't such a bad swing. Just wear "throwaway" sweats and gloves to the start line and ditch them when you don't need them anymore.
You'll do fine!
My taper madness started two weeks before my taper. You'll be fine.
How many items do you have on your packing for the marathon checklist? I'm up to 23 and still counting.
a) You need your iPod. The band thingy is overrated.
b) I love your last bullet. I get it.
Good luck on the taper MADness!
Classic case of taper madness.
Get a hold of yourself! Take a shot of Tullamore Dew. Relax. You'll be fine. No point in worrying until you're at the starting line. And then, just make sure your shoes are double-knotted. Cheers.
If you don't trust your driver, check out the Phoenix metro. It'll be about a mile walk from Central Station to the start line, but not having to fight traffic could make that 'warm up' worth while.
Good luck!
Aw man Razz...I agree with Vanilla, I shouldn't have read this before the marathon! Now I'm freaking out too! Dang you Razz, and your taper madness!
It's just the madness. You'll be fine!!
RNR's are well supported races. For the RNR I did, I forgot to use body glide beforehand. I didn't need it in training, so I didn't think I'd need it race day. They had some gel/vaseline type stuff there at the race and for that I am forever grateful!
They even had Tylenol and salt. I was impressed! If ever I lose my mind again and decide to so another marathon, I would definitely do a RNR.
