SSTIFY - History Lesson

This week's entry should be familiar for 2 groups of people. As I see it, the dividing line is 1981, the year this album came out.

For those of you born pre-1981:

Journey's Escape has got to be one of the most iconic albums of my generation. I had it on cassette and I played the hell out of of it on my Walkman and boom box. Steve Perry had some mad vocals and he alone made Journey one of the most recognizable sounds of the decade. There are just a handful of front men during that time period (mid 70's - late '80's) that can lay claim to that:
  1. Axl Rose
  2. Freddie Mercury
  3. Bon Scott
  4. Bono
  5. Steve Perry
Can you imagine GnR, Queen, AC/DC, U2 or Journey without them? Really?

For those of you born post-1981:

It's from Fox's new series, Glee.

I feel bad for the future.

Enjoy.

I love Journey! There are two songs I can rock out in Spin class. Hmm did I use Journey and rock out in the same paragrah? I'm outta here before I lay down my age on the line!

Probably biased, but I would add Tom Petty in there as well. "Damn the Torpedos" made it to #2 on the Billboard Charts, only being held back by Pink Floyd's "The Wall." Talk about an iconic album..."The Wall"!

Looking to today, outside of Bono, Petty is the only one still going strong.

As for AC/DC - can you imagine if Bon Scott had not passed away? Holy crap that band kicked ass. "Dirty Deeds" baby!

Some other random frontmen or women you might consider from that time period:

Deborah Harry - Blondie (could there even be a Blondie with Debbie?)

Jeff Lynne - ELO (I dare you to name anyone else from that band)

Steven Tyler - Aerosmith

OK, I could go on for hours - let's turn the "way back machine" off for now!

You gotta love Journey. They're the best to play on Rock Band!

I can, and will, attest to the fact Razz played these cassettes constantly. I even had the songs memorized!!

I saw Journey last year with that Filipino front man, who was surprisingly Perry-esque. From as far away as I was, I could barely tell the difference.

I think you're leaving a lot of front men off your list, but I'll save you the extra long comment.

Those are some tight pants!

My friend's 3 year old was singing this song a couple of weeks ago. Only in her version, it went "just a city boy born with a wall of toys". You hear what you want to I guess. So there's hope for the future after all.
