Is it Capitol or Capital?

In 48 hours, yours truly will be on a Southwest flight bound for our nation's capital.  Oh, plus 28 of my closest students.  It's the annual National High School Journalism Conference where 5000 of the top student journalists converge to piss off about 300 of the top journalism teachers.  Yeah!

The 2 things I'll check out when I get to the hotel:
  1. What are the best running routes?
  2. Is the hotel bar conveniently located and hidden from curious students?  Don't ever underestimate the location of the bar.
This is the 7 trip to the convention and the 4th city in which I have incorporated running into my itinerary.  A brief reflection if you will:
  • Nashville - A surprisingly fun town.  I had relatively low expectations for Music City, USA, but the people were exceptionally nice and there was a lot more to do than listen to country music.  My run was around the Opryland Resort....one lap = 4.1 miles.  No kidding.  This hotel/compound was mammoth.
  • Philadelphia - Great city with a lot of history.  Duh.  We did the touristy stuff complete with sucking down more than one cheesesteak.  I had to do my run to the Philadelphia Museum of Art.  There was a collection of Van Gogh's work that I wanted to see.  Ha!  I just wanted to run the steps a la Rocky.  Cheesy?  Hell yeah.  As cheesy as one of these bad boys:

mmmmmmm....
  •  St. Louis - Blech.  That's the best thing I can say about this town.  There's one thing to look at and I ran around it about 5 times to get my miles in because I was competing in the Garmin Challenge.  You can read about it here, but here's a synopsis:  River wall on the left, dumps on the right, and a quick jaunt into East St. Louis, Illinois.  Ladies and gentlemen, The Gateway to the West!
My hopes are high for D.C.  I've never been there.  Usually the first reaction I get is, "You've never been to D.C.????"  My response is, "No.  I though I was pretty clear the first time I made that statement, jackhole."  Some people.  But I digress.....

The weather looks good for a couple of runs.  I've packed the gear although I think the running tights are staying home.  I don't think my students and/or colleagues need to see all of that awesomeness so early in the morning.  Like I said, we're leaving with 30 and, if we come back with 28 or more, I'm going to consider that a win.  I mean, that's a 93% return rate.  I'd say that's pretty damn good.

Wish me luck!  I hope to post something while I'm there.  I'm clearing out the memory card so that I can get some good pics/evidence.

Capitol :-)
Lots of great running in a city that isn't too frigid yet--have fun!

You are going to love it! I wish I had the time to run it when I visited but alas it was frigid and just not enough time to squeeze it in. Enjoy!

It's capital, unless you're referring to the actual building with all the columns and stuff where Congress meets and the pres is inaugurated. That's the Capitol. There's also a Capitol in every state, usually the legislature meets there, etc.

Hope this helps. :)

I really like Philly. Ran there in January and made sure to do the Rocky run too. It was awesome.

DC should be fun. Good luck with the kiddies and try to keep the surviving ones un-maimed.

DC is a blast and there are lots of good places to run (as long as you don't let stopping at traffic lights annoy you like I do sometimes). I recommend running around the Tidal Basin if you can work that into some run. I did that on a lunch run once from my office and it was gorgeous.

Running the Mall is fun too if you don't mind dodging tourists and I've heard good things from runners in my office about Rock Creek Park, though I don't run there myself.

I'd offer to meet you for a run one day, but you'd most definitely leave me in the dust haha!

Have a great time! DC is an awesome running city. If you get a chance, one really cool place to go is the Old Post Office pavilion - better views than the Washington Monument.

If you need any suggestions, feel free to shoot me an email.

Sounds like a good time. Well, except for the kids part.
I also ran in Philly and had the same lamo sandwich from Pat's back in June (check my archive for my take on the whole deal). I only got in one outdoor run, but it was pretty damn cool. I skipped the steps though.

28/30 is an 'A' right? Heck, come home with 23/30 and you still get a 'C'. Solid average grade.

You've already been corrected. Nothing else to say, except run well and drink well. And don't get make threats toward the president. Cheers!

You can't be serious...you've never been to D.C.? Really?

If you pair the kids off, when two of them get lost, you can blame it on each other. I don't know where little billy went, he was paired up with suzy - they are probably out doing pot.

I've never been to D.C. either. Than again, I've never been to mt. rushmore either, and I've lived in sodak my whole (almost) 26 years. Is a partial child return still a success by your standards? Say...27 3/4? I should think so.
